Team Sponsorship
SMHA teams are permitted to seek out team sponsorships with all funds going to support hockey related team activities such as tournament fees.
While there are no hard and fast rules on how much to ask for and what to offer in return, we do have guidelines.
Some sponsors are just happy to see their money going to a minor hockey team and don't need anything really tangible in return other than a huge thank you. Others would like to see something visible as well as a huge thank you. Sponsors can offer cash or sometimes products or services, like baseball caps for the team.
In exchange, teams have the ability to offer:
- Sponsor name on name bars, either home jerseys or away jerseys or both
- A picture of the team on a plaque that the sponsor can put on their wall at work
- The sponsor's name on the SMHA website under the Team Sponsor page, with a link to their company's website
- The sponsor's name on a banner that is displayed behind the team bench at games
- and of course, undying gratitude
What to charge is not dictated by the association but we publish these suggestions to avoid the potentially embarrassing situation of one team charging a sponsor a significantly different amount than another team for essentially the same sponsorship value.
We suggest two possible packages:
1) A major team sponsor who gives $400-$500 would get their company name on the names bars of either the home or away jerseys. The team would buy the name bars and ensure they got sewn on. The team would also give the sponsor a team picture and the sponsor's name would be listed on the SMHA website with a link to their website.
2) A regular team sponsor who gives an undetermined amount could get a team picture and the sponsor's name would be listed on the SMHA website with a link to their website.
3) Your sponsor may also want to become an SMHA association sponsor with exposure that would go beyond one team. Examples of this might be someone who would like to sponsor all the water bottles for all the teams, or get their services listed on the home page of the SMHA website. If they express an interest in this area, you can direct them to info@stittsvillemha.com.
We've also attached a sample letter (word doc) you could sent to possible sponsors, and when you sign them up and want them listed on the SMHA website, just send an email to our communications director.
Good Luck!!
