Stittsville Rampage win Gold at Quebec City Cup

The Stittsville Rampage Midget hockey team won Gold at the Quebec City Cup on the weekend of Jan 16-18th.

In the picturesque setting of Old Quebec City, the Rampage didn't let the frigid cold temperatures dampen their enthusiasm as they hit the ice for Game 1 against the Essex Vermont White team. It took a period for the "car legs" to wear off however the Rampage took control of the game mid way through the second and went on to win 6-3 with Simon Rose getting a hat trick and singles from Chris Deschamps, Mackenzie Racicot and Chad Groulx. The player of the game was Mackenzie Racicot.

On a few hours rest the Rampage were back on the ice against the North York Knights. This game was fast and furious with both teams going all out. The Rampage opened a two goal lead with a two goal performance by Cole Hodge. With just under two minutes left to play North York pressed hard and scored to break the shut-out. Not done scoring yet the Knights pressed for the equalizer and scored in the final minute to earn the 2-2 tie. Cole Hodge was awarded the player of the game.

Needing a win or tie on Saturday to advance to the final, the Rampage came out flying against the strong Essex Vermont Blue team. Cody Sargent opened the scoring in the power play to give the Rampage the lead. However the lead was short lived as Essex stormed back with two goals before the period ended. For the first time in this tournament the Rampage would have to come from behind if they wanted to win the game. Simon Rose scored his first of two with Alex Quesnel and Cole Hodge scoring singles to take the Rampage to a 5-2 lead . Nolan Hodge shut the door in nets as the Rampage weathered two 5 on 3 advantages earning the win and a spot in the Gold Medal game. Player of the game was awarded to Alex Quesnel

Sunday, was a rematch of North York Knights vs Stittsville Rampage with Gold on the line at the Quebec Pepsi Colisee. A game with two evenly matched teams, both built on speed and quick puck movement, meant that the game was quick, end to end and kept the parents on the edge of their seats. The Knights struck first hammering the 3rd rebound past Scott Heggart to get the early lead. The Rampage answered back before the period ended with a goal from Chris Deschamps on a nice passing play from Mackenzie Racicot and Cody Sargent. It was a scoreless second period despite many glorious scoring chances by both teams but strong defense by Alex Hein, Cody Sargent, Neil Duggan and Shane Brownlee combined with stellar goaltending by Scott Heggart held off the Knights attack. The Rampage forwards Chad Groulx, Mackenzie Racicot, Chris Deschamps, Simon Rose, Cole Hodge, Alex Quesnel and Tyler Ferguson peppered the Knight's goaltender with shots but could not break the deadlock. The third period was again fast and furious as it became apparent that the next goal would most likely win the gold!!! With under a minute and 30 seconds to go, the Rampage were assigned a penalty giving the Rampage coaching staff ulcers and the Knights an opportunity to win. The Rampage held fast and kept the surging Knights from scoring that elusive goal. The Knights pressed and finally Chad Groulx cleared the zone by chipping the puck out over the blue line. Tyler Ferguson raced after the loose puck and held off the Knights defenseman as he entered the zone and beat the goaltender low to the stick side with a mere 7.4 seconds left on the clock to give the Rampage the lead. This time the Rampage would not relinquish the lead and captured the Gold Medal. Tyler Ferguson was awarded the player of the Game and Simon Rose picked up the Tournament MVP award.
