Peewee B2, The Stittsville STEEL, won the Smiths Falls tournament

Peewee B2, The Stittsville STEEL, won the Smiths Falls tournament on January 2nd!

The Stittsville Steel started the New Year off with a bang, going undefeated to win the Smiths Falls Peewee B Tournament. The Steel played three of their best games of the season.

The Steel would start the Tournament off with a big challenge as they faced the Smiths Falls Bears B2 team who had beaten the Steel 6-1 in the Eganville Tournament. Both teams would come out flying in what would be a physical game with end to end action. The two teams would take turns with the lead, but each time the other team would respond to tie things up. With a little more than four minutes left in the game it was starting to look like the game would end in a tie until the bears were able cash in on a breakaway. The Steel didn't give up and pressed hard for the equalizer. With a minute left the Steel would pull their goalie for the extra attacker and throw everything they had at the Bears. The clock was down to just 7 seconds when a Steel blast from the point was tipped in front, changed directions, and slide in between the Bears netminder's legs to tie the game up at 3 and that's how it would end.

The Steel's second game would be against the Almonte/Pakenham Thunder. The Thunder would open the scoring in the 1st but the Steel would quickly get that one back and never looked back. A great team effort with some great fore checking and some spectacular goaltending would see the Steel win 4-1.

The Steel came out sluggish to start the championship game and gave the Smiths Falls Bears B1 a couple of early chances. The Steel woke up after that and dominated the play for most of the 1st and 2nd periods. The Bears were a much larger and more physical team than the Steel, but the Steel were not intimidated. After two periods the game remained scoreless and it would come down to final period to determine a winner. The Bears continued to hammer away at the Steel but it would be the Steel who would finally get the first goal of the game. Alex W would win a battle in the neutral zone and streaking down the left boards, cut in and let a rocket of a wrist shot go that beat the Bears' keeper high glove side. The Bears turned their game up to full as they came storming back trying to get the equalizer. Connor P made some brilliant pad saves turning away everything sent his way. As the clock ticked down and the Bears out with the extra attacker, the Steel stood tall, shots were blocked, saves were made and the puck cleared out of harm's way at every opportunity. Jacob G (27) won 3 straight face-offs in the Steel zone stymieing the Bears attack. The final buzzer went and the Steel had their first Tournament win of the year!
