Stittsville Ice Wolves Win Pembroke Tournament
The tournament hosted 12 talented teams from across Eastern Ontario, divided into three pools.
The Ice Wolves started their run to the cup with a game Saturday afternoon against the Kemptville Panthers B2 team. The Ice Wolves went down a goal midway through the first period but tied the game a short time later with a goal by Caelan Anderson, assisted by Chulsoon Hwang and Jean-Francois Gervais. A go-ahead goal in the second by Anderson, assisted by Jakob Smith, put the Ice Wolves in the lead but the Panthers weren't finished. They tied it up midway through the third. Undaunted, the Ice Wolves met the challenge only 45 seconds later with a goal by Anakin Burns, assisted by Ryan ‘Boomer' Rintoul. This would be the game winner. Stittsville Ice Wolves - 3, Kemptville Panthers - 2.
After a boisterous team dinner at a local restaurant, the Ice Wolves took to the ice again for the last game of the day vs. the hometown Pembroke Panthers. The scoring opened in the first period with a goal by Caelan Anderson, unassisted. After a scoreless second, Anderson opened the third period with another point, assisted by Jakob Smith. The period wrapped up with a hat trick for Anderson, putting the game out of reach for the Panthers. Strong defensive work by Patrick Lenz, JF Gervais, Dawson Brindle, Chulsoon Hwang and Ryan Rintoul kept the game tight. Goalie Zachary Girouard added another shutout to his record of seven already earned this season. Stittsville Ice Wolves -3, Pembroke Panthers - 0.
The second day of play didn't start until mid-afternoon Sunday for the young Stittsville team. The final round-robin game saw them face the Renfrew Kinsmen. Pressure on the Kinsmen came hard and fast from Brendan Campbell, Corby McCormick and Charlie Armstrong but they were held off the score sheet by a desperate Renfrew team. The first marker came in the second period with a goal by Caelan Anderson, assisted by Alex Eaton. An insurance goal came eight seconds later with a shot by Anakin Burns, fed from Anderson. Caelan Anderson sealed the victory with another goal in the third period. Outstanding play between the pipes earned Zachary Girouard his second shutout of the tournament. Stittsville Ice Wolves - 3, Renfrew Kinsmen - 0.Their determination and stellar play helped the Ice Wolves capture not only the pool, but also first place overall going into the semi-final round.
After an hour of ‘rest' and refueling, the Ice Wolves faced the ‘Wild Card‘ Pembroke Pythons in the semi-final. The short break seemed to be enough as the team opened the scoring at the seven minute mark of the first period with a goal by Russell Cavanagh, assisted by Anakin Burns. The team closed the period with a nifty goal by Pierce Dresser, unassisted. The Ice Wolves took firm hold of the contest in the second with a goal from Caelan Anderson, assisted by Alex Eaton. The score continued to mount in the third with a goal by Russell Cavanagh, aided by the superb passing skills of Anakin Burns and Chulsoon Hwang. Another unassisted goal for Burns brought us to the final minute of play where the Pythons were finally able to break through the rock-solid defense to send a goal over the stick side shoulder of Zachary Girouard. The final point came from an unassisted marker by Russell Cavanagh with only one second left in the game. Final score: Stittsville Ice Wolves - 6, Pembroke Pythons - 1.
Boosted by multiple slushies and dreams of victory, the Ice Wolves sat idle for another hour before the final game vs. the Renfrew Milano Pizzeria team Renfrew had played an overtime game in their hard-fought semi-final and the Ice Wolves secretly hoped their energy level would be somewhat depleted. The tension in the stands was palpable with both teams reveling in the thrill of a large number of noisy, hopeful fans.
Scoring opened mid-way through the first period with an unassisted goal by Caelan Anderson. The chances were many at both ends with the Campbell/Armstrong/McCormick line having several near-misses. The Ice Wolves managed to double the score in the second period with a shot by Anderson, assisted by Pierce Dresser. There was no time to sit back and relax though as Milano's managed to net one less than a minute later. Play was non-stop and edgy from both sides but the Renfrew team wasn't going down without a fight. They tied the game with just three minutes remaining in the third, sending the boys to overtime!
The overtime period was a sudden death, three-on-three pressure cooker. Both teams put on a fierce struggle but the Ice Wolves ended the game with a well-timed cross-ice pass to Anakin Burns who raced for the net and beat the Renfrew goalie for the winning point. What an exciting finish to a great weekend of hockey for the Stittsville team!
The Ice Wolves play in the Atom B Redline division of the Lanark Carleton Minor Hockey League. They have remained one of the top teams in their division all season thanks to the outstanding coaching of Dave McCormick, Rob Anderson, Chris Burns and Ray Girouard.
