Congrats to the Midget B1 Cowboys
On the drive down to Kingston, my son was telling me that they were going to do well at this tournament. I tried to manage expectations (after all they did end the season in last place) but he was adamant. I should know by now to never count a group of teenagers out - they came to play and did they ever play well.
They won their first game, and then won their second game. A loss in the third game was only a momentary glitch as their point standing easily pulled them into the quarterfinals the next day. They walked into the rink to find they were to face none other than their year long nemisis from their own backyard, Stittsville B3, the winners of the regular season. It took a shootout to break the tie but the Cowboys were off to the semi-finals. Yet another Stittsville team, the minor Midget checking team, was waiting for them! The semi-final was an amazing game, end to end action, no penalties, and both teams worked as hard as they could. The game ended in a zero/zero tie that could not be resolved in overtime and had to broken in the Cowboy's favor with yet another shootout.
Two hours later, the Cowboys were off to play their third game of the day against a strong Kingston team. It took the exhausted Cowboys a few minutes to realize their oponent was very strong, and minutes into the game they were down 4:0. The parents were packing up their cameras when the boys woke up and started their comeback, shocking the Kingston team and losing the game by only two goals - 6:4.
It was a super end to the season, with the team showing great teamwork so that goals came from many of the kids, there were very few penalties and of course everyone enjoyed the party in the hotel. We can't forget the bench staff whose many hours of work were appreciated by all and a special mention must go to our incredible goaltender Alex Lavoie, who was outstanding. With his father back from 6 months on military duty in Afghanistan and watching from the stands, Alex was unbeatable in the shootouts and was named MVP in the final game.
