February 2010 Newsletter

Hello fellow hockey parents

It's hard to believe that playoffs are just around the corner - how time flies when you spend it watching kids enjoy our greatest sport.

Lots of news for you this month....First off, we have two great events to tell you about.

RINK for PINK

Don't forget to come out and support RINK for PINK on February 13th 2010 between 12:00 pm and 2 pm. A charity hockey game between the two local Stittsville Atom A teams (Rough Riders and Rebels) will be followed by special on-ice presentations by Max Keeping, JR from the Team1200 and Councillor Shad Qadri participate in the event.

This event is a cancer fundraiser with a suggested donation of $5 at the door, with an amazing raffle, silent auction and bake sales going on during the event. All proceeds will go to the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation. In addition to raising awareness about fighting cancer, we also hope to teach our children that it is important to give back to the community.

So come out as a team (support the event by wearing pink if you’d like!) and invite your friends and family. If you would like to assist or donate to this cause, please contact Pearl Dresser at 613-836-6870.

Rooting for René

On Sunday Jan 17th, 40-year-old René Faucher was carrying the puck up the ice during a rec hockey game when he hit a rut and crashed headfirst into the boards. The impact crushed three of his vertebrae, leaving him paralyzed from the chest down.

The father of three young children is expected to be in the hospital for at least a year through his recovery and rehabilitation. He did not have any long-term disability insurance. He had recently wound down his business and was starting to develop plans for his next venture.

Two SMHA teams want to help.  Stittsville Bantam B1 and Stittsville B2 are playing an exhibition game at SCOTIABANK PLACE on Friday Feb 12/2010 at 7pm. The Teams would like to invite all other Stittsville Teams from all other divisions to come and watch and bring a donation for the Faucher family.

We’d also like all attending this special event to bring canned goods and other non-perishable items to fill the cupboards of the Stittsville Food Bank. There is no fee to enter the Scotiabank Place so please give generously.

Receipts - new this year

A Child Fitness Tax Credit is available to many SMHA members as part of your annual income tax return. To remind yourself of how much you paid so you claim the correct amount, you can find all the fees on the Registration Fees page.  Revenue Canada does NOT require you to include a receipt with your income tax return. Receipts are only needed if you get audited.  We are not sending out receipts for 2009/2010 registration fees this season but if you are audited and need one, you can request one by completing this form. Please only request one if you need one as these take time to produce and we are all volunteers with day jobs.

Doing Good!

Earlier this season, one of our SMHA kids recently found out that a friend of his was going through tough times and was having to skip a year of hockey.  Not happy with that situation, he contacted Allan Read of the Gil Read Foundation, http://www.gilreadmemorial.com whose goal is to help kids who are less fortunate play sports,  The Gil Foundation has agreed to sponsor their first SMHA hockey player, and thanks to them one more child in our area will be enjoying the sport we all love so much.  Gil Read Foundation – you are awesome!

Tournament Winners

The RAMS Rep B organization put in a very strong performance at this year’s Mid-Season Showdown.  Overall the RAMS had 5 of 9 teams advancing to the final with many other teams only missing by the slightest of margins.  When the dust settled the RAMS were champions in 3 divisions, Major Midget, Minor Midget and Major Bantam.

The thriller of the weekend was the Minor Midgets who triumphed in a shootout after double overtime solved nothing.   Keeping the fans on the edge of their seats, the RAMS needed all 5 shooters to win with Adam Aziz scoring the championship goal.

This year’s tournament was the biggest yet for the RAMS and the Sensplex with 76 teams competing in all 8 competitive age groups.  Our thanks go out to the Sensplex staff for putting forward an excellent tournament this year. Congratulations to all our players and bench staff on a fantastic tournament and also to the winners of each of the divisions.

The Stittsville Peewee Lightning are the 2010 champions of the prestigious Cap-de-la-Madeleine National Pee-Wee Tournament at the Pee-Wee B House league level, completing a five-game week-end of hockey on Sunday January 31, 2010.

The Stittsville Novice A1 Stallions took top honours in the Russell Warriors Annual Novice Tournament, with a victorious win of 4-2 over the West End Killer Bees.

The Stittsville Bantam A2 team won the championship at the Scarborough Youth Hockey League "House League Select" tournament, Jan. 14-17, in a come-from-behind 2-1 win over Oakville - the same team that defeated them 2-0 earlier in the tournament.  The final followed an exciting double-overtime 1-0 semi-final win over Willowdale.

The Stittsville Midget A3 team participated in the Carleton Place Tournament on Saturday, December 19th winning the ‘A’ final.

Hope you all enjoy the rest of the season and don't forget to reply to this email and let me know what you are thinking so I can share with everyone.  This YOUR association!
