Parent Info
For those who are interested in competitive hockey, SMHA players are offered three choices:
- Tier 1 hockey with the Ottawa Valley Titans
- Tier 2 hockey with the Ottawa Valley Silver Seven
- Tier 3 (or B hockey) with the Stittsville RAMS
For an overview of the different levels of competitive hockey, please see the Question and Answer interview with Sittsville's Competitive Director, Brian Hepburn.
The Stittsville RAMS Program
The Stittsville RAMS program provides SMHA members an opportunity to compete in the ODMHL “B” league.
Practices and Games
The RAMS teams play a 30-game schedule for league games. Our home ice, for games and practices, is at Stittsville Arena, GRC, Sensplex, and Beckwith.
We will have close to 3 hours of “home ice” per week per RAMS team this season. This covers both practice time and home games. In addition there is typically an average of about 1 away game per week – although there may be weeks with as many as 2 or 3 away games. This means that a typical RAMS team will be on the ice 3-4 times per week. In addition to this most teams will do approximately 4 tournaments over the course of the season.
Costs
The fees for playing RAMS hockey for the 2007-2008 season total approximately $1,390. This consists of the $480 SMHA registration fee (already paid at time of SMHA registration) plus a $510 RAMS fee, plus an approximate team fee of $400. Please note, the team fee may vary slightly since it covers tournaments and other team-specific items.
Tryouts
Tryouts are held in September; please see here for the tryout schedule.
Registration for tryouts is done just prior to the first tryout session. Please arrive a little early to register and get a tryout sweater. Please bring a cheque made out to the Stittsville RAMS for $70.
Tryout Process
Each player trying out for the RAMS is guaranteed a minimum of 3 hours of icetime before the first releases are made.
To evaluate the players, we have a selection committee for each team, that consists of the Head Coach, typically 2 independent evaluators (i.e. no relation to anyone trying out for the team), plus 2 members of our RAMS executive.
The first releases of players are done by letter that each player receives after the 3rd hour of ice stating whether the player is continuing on with the tryout process or reporting to the House program of SMHA. Subsequent releases are done in person with the Head Coach and a member of the RAMS executive. Parents are welcome to attend this meeting along with their child.
Conditioning Camp
An optional Conditioning Camp is held during the last week of August. Please see here for more information on dates, times, and sign-up info.
