U7 Program – Frequently Asked Questions

As you prepare for the upcoming season, you may have a number of questions. This FAQ is designed to introduce you to the U7 program. Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any additional questions.

Q: When does the season run?

A: The Initiation Program season runs from early September to the end of March. The first two weeks consist of optional conditioning sessions designed to help players get comfortable on the ice and excited for the season. Sessions run on Saturday and Sunday mornings.

Q: What does my child need to play?

A: Please see the equipment list here. Each child will receive a jersey for games and practices, but hockey socks are not provided at this level (contrary to older‑level information on the website). For new players, Canadian Tire Kanata sells starter kits that include most required equipment. Please ensure all helmets are CSA‑approved with a wire face guard or full plastic shield and have not expired.

Q: What does the program cost?

A: In addition to registration fees, each team raises funds for activities such as a holiday party, year‑end party, fun days, and/or team apparel. These fees generally range from $50–$150 but can be reduced through sponsorship and team fundraising.

Q: What rinks will my child play at?

A: Most sessions take place at Beckwith Recreation Complex (1319 9th Line, Carleton Place) and Johnny Leroux Arena (10 Warner‑Colpitts, Stittsville). Each team will participate in at least one fun day (maximum of three), hosted within the Ottawa area.

Q: What are the evaluation sessions?

A: After conditioning sessions, players participate in two evaluation sessions. On‑ice helpers observe players performing drills similar to those used during conditioning to ensure proper team placement. Our goal is to support development and ensure players have fun. If your child will miss evaluations, please notify the convenor in advance and ensure they attend conditioning sessions.

Q: Can my child play with a friend?

A: Our first priority is placing each child on the appropriate team for their skill level. All friend requests at U7 must be submitted using the following form: Friend Request Form

Q: What is Respect in Sport?

A: The Respect in Sport mission is to empower people to recognize and prevent abuse, bullying, and harassment through interactive online certification. Their vision is to inspire a global culture of respect. Beginning in the 2015–16 season, parents of players in the HEO jurisdiction are required to complete the Respect in Sport Parent Program. The program costs approximately $12 and must be completed once by at least one parent/guardian for each player at the IP/Novice level or new to hockey.

Players cannot go on the ice unless the RIS Parent Program is complete.

Note: The Parent Program is different from the Respect in Sport Leader/Coach Program or the former Speak Out program. Parents who have taken those programs must still complete the Parent Program.

If you completed the program within the last two years for another child, please contact u7convenor@stittsvilleminorhockey.com for instructions on updating your Respect in Sport profile.

Q: How can I get involved?

A: The U7 program relies heavily on parent volunteers. Each team requires coaches, on‑ice helpers, a trainer, and a team manager. Volunteering at this age is extremely rewarding for both parents and players. All volunteers must complete a Police Record Check. If you are interested or would like to begin the record check process, please email u7convenor@stittsvilleminorhockey.com.
